What to Look for When Bidding on a Used Firearm

Buying a used firearm through an online auction site like eGunner.com can be a smart way to find great deals on modern pistols, rifles, shotguns, and more! As with any pre-owned purchase, it’s important to read all of the descriptions and know what you’re getting. Whether you’re a seasoned buyer or looking to bid for the first time, here’s a list of things you need to look for before you place your bid.

1. Read the Full Item Description

Always start by carefully reading the seller’s description of the item checking for:

  • The firearm’s make, model, and caliber
  • Year of manufacture (if available)
  • Overall condition and details about wear or use
  • Any upgrades, modifications, or accessories included

If you have any questions about the listing, please be sure to contact the seller to  ask questions.

2. Examine the Photos Closely

Photos provide valuable insight into a firearm’s condition. Look for clear, high-resolution images that show:

  • Both sides of the firearm
  • Close-ups of the barrel, bore, and action
  • Any visible wear, scratches, rust, or pitting
  • A photo of the serial number for authenticity and history checks

If a listing lacks sufficient images, it’s a good idea to ask the seller for additional photos before placing a bid.

3. Check the Firearm’s Functionality

Although you won’t be able to test fire the gun before purchase, a responsible seller should clearly describe whether the firearm cycles properly, locks up tight, and has no known mechanical problems. Be cautious of listings marked “as-is” or “for parts only,” as these often indicate potential issues or state the less than perfect condition of the firearm.

4. Confirm the Seller’s FFL Transfer Process

All firearm purchases on eGunner.com must go through a licensed Federal Firearms License (FFL) dealer before being transferred to the buyer. Make sure the seller explains their FFL transfer process and confirm that your local dealer will accept a transfer from them.

5. Know the Market Value

Before you start bidding, take a moment to research what similar firearms are selling for in comparable condition. Browse past auction results on eGunner.com and check other trusted marketplaces so you can set a smart bidding limit and avoid overpaying.

6. Watch for Buyer’s Premiums and Fees

Some auctions include a buyer’s premium, which is an added percentage on top of the final winning bid, as well as shipping and FFL transfer fees. Be sure to factor these additional costs into your total budget to avoid any surprises after the auction ends.

Final Thoughts

Bidding on used firearms can be a great way to expand your collection, discover hard-to-find models, or pick up a quality piece at a fair price. By following this checklist and doing a little homework, you can bid with confidence and enjoy a safe, successful experience on eGunner.com
